Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

No artificial tooth can replace a natural tooth. For this reason, the aim of all treatments in dentistry is to keep the teeth in the mouth in a healthy way. During the applied dental treatments, the tooth is tried to be preserved as alive as possible. However, if it is not possible to treat and protect the dental pulp alive, root canal treatment is applied to the tooth. Patients who will have root canal treatment for the first time think that this will be an uncomfortable and painful intervention. The reason for this is that the root canal treatment procedure is not known by the patients and the relatives of the patient who have had bad experiences in the past raise the patient’s awareness incorrectly. Root canal treatment is definitely not a painful process, with the help of local anesthetics, the patient can comfortably complete the treatment in our Istanbul Smile Center clinic without feeling any pain during the root canal treatment sessions. Root canal treatment sessions can be completed as a single or two sessions. In root canal treatment, the nerve tissue of the tooth is removed, this space is shaped, cleaned and filled with canal filling materials until the tooth root tip. If root canal treatment is not performed, in cases where the dental pulp is damaged due to caries, trauma or periodontal disease, the tooth loses its vitality and the infection spreads to the whole tooth over time. If the tooth is not treated in this case, the infection will affect the tissues around the root, causing the bone to melt in that area. Tooth abscess occurs in this cavity formed in the bone. The abscess is accompanied by swelling and pain, and the tooth may be lost in a short time.

Root Canal Treatment Procedures

  • Local anesthesia is applied to the area where root canal treatment will be applied,
  • X-ray film is taken of the area where root canal treatment will be applied,
  • A “Rubber Cover” is applied around the tooth to be treated for root canal treatment. The rubber cover prevents the bacteria in the saliva from escaping into the treated tooth during root canal treatment, and the root canal treatment is terminated in a sterile environment. At the same time, the patient is prevented from swallowing the instruments and solutions used in root canal treatment. It provides a comfortable, reliable and quality treatment for the patient and the physician,
  • The decayed tooth tissue is removed from the environment and the canal chamber located in the middle of the tooth is entered,
  • Depending on the anatomy of the treated tooth, shaping is done in one or more channels,
  • For full and accurate detection of the channel ends, instruments that give signals at the full channel end are used,
  • The canal shaping process, which starts with hand tools, is terminated by using rotary tools,
  • All channels are washed with antibacterial solutions,
  • Then the canal is clogged with rubber-based materials and special canal drugs,
  • The most important step in the success of root canal treatment is to end the treatment in a STERILE environment from the beginning to the end.

In the patient’s tooth;

Pain that does not go away for a long time, starting with heat and cold,
Pain that wakes you up at night
If there is pain that starts on its own, the pulp inflammation does not have a chance to heal and return to normal. Root canal treatment is mandatory.
If not, the inflammation in the pulp causes severe pain and infection, followed by abscess formation and damage to the bone surrounding the tooth.

Preserving the natural tooth should always be preferred. One or more missing teeth may cause displacement of adjacent teeth and deterioration of posture. In addition, if the natural teeth are preserved, there is no need for expensive and deep treatments such as implants or bridges. If root canal treatment is not applied to a damaged and infected tooth, the tooth may become the infection center of the body.

In general, root canal treatments are performed due to deep and widespread caries. For this reason, the tooth is in a weak condition even before the treatment. If the tooth is crowned or filled with a tooth-colored composite filling after root canal treatment, the tooth can be used for life.
